Arreaga is added to Ecuador’s FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 final roster
Xavier Arreaga, who plays defense for Sounders FC, has been selected to be on the Ecuador national team squad for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM. Arreaga has been given a call-up to the FIFA World Cup for the first time ever. He is one of the 26 players that Head Coach Gustavo Alfaro has selected to compete in the next tournament. As of this month, current Sounders FC players Arreaga, Jordan Morris, Cristian Roldan, and Nouhou will all be making their trip to Qatar for the World Cup, making the Rave Green the team to send the most players to a single World Cup in the history of the franchise.
Ecuador is competing in the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 2014. The South American nation was placed in Group A earlier this year and will begin their tournament against Qatar, the tournament host, on November 20. They will then face the Netherlands on November 25 and Senegal on November 29.
Garth Lagerwey, the general manager of Sounders FC and the president of the soccer department, said, “We are tremendously proud of Xavier, and we wish him the best of luck representing Ecuador at the World Cup.” “Over the past several years, he has been a vital member of Ecuador’s squad, and as a result, we are delighted to see him rewarded with the opportunity to compete on the world’s stage,” said the coach.
Xavier Arreaga, who is now 28 years old, has earned 17 career caps for La Tri, beginning in 2018
These caps include nine appearances during the team’s qualification campaign for the FIFA World Cup. Xavier Arreaga scored his one and only goal for Mexico in a 6-1 victory over Colombia on November 17, 2020. Since joining the Rave Green squad in 2019, Arreaga has appeared in a total of 99 games in all competitions for the club, during which time he has scored three goals. After leading Seattle to a championship earlier this year, he was recognized for his play by being selected to the 2022 Concacaf Best XI squad.
According to Head Coach Brian Schmetzer, “Congratulations to Xavier Arreaga for the amazing opportunity to compete at the World Cup.” Since he arrived in Seattle, his dedication to both his club and country teams has been clear, and we are looking forward to watching him play alongside his fellow Sounders in Qatar. “His hard work and passion to his national team have been evident since he arrived in Seattle.”
Arreaga will be playing alongside teammates Jordan Morris (United States), Cristian Roldan (United States), and Nouhou (Cameroon) in Qatar. All of these players were named to the final lineups for their countries last week. Arreaga will be joining them. In the history of the Rave Green, the number of players selected for the tournament that is now at play is at its highest.
At the end of the 2022 season, Sounders FC ended with a record of 16-17-5 in all competitions. Following a regular season in which the Rave Green failed to qualify for the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs for the very first time in the club’s 14-year history, the Rave Green became the first Major League Soccer team to win the Concacaf Champions League in the spring. This accomplishment came before the club’s regular season. As the Seattle Sounders head into the offseason, they have already begun planning for the 2023 season, which will begin with the FIFA Club World Cup.
