Haji Wright 24-year-old attacker knows both Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie from their time playing together. The three of them were reunited over the summer when Wright was invited into USMNT training. They had last played together at the U17 World Cup in 2015 and played in the same group. They will be able to compete against each other on the national squad at the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
Although Wright may not be well known to fans of U.S. national team soccer, he has a long history of playing for a variety of clubs overseas and scored a goal in his maiden international match on June 1 against Morocco. In the 2021-22 season, he had a breakout year at the Turkish club Antalyaspor, where he ended among the top scorers in the Super Lig. He had a season in which he scored 15 goals in 35 matches, including seven consecutive games in the months of April and May. It was at that point that Berhalter became interested in him.
In May, before to a USMNT friendly, Pulisic made a statement that appears to have been prophetic by saying, “That was the duo back in the day, me and Haji.” “As members of the youth national teams, we competed in a number of games together. And it’s amazing to have him back in, first of all, especially after seeing him perform so admirably at the club level; having him here is wonderful. So it looks like he’s going to get the chance he’s been looking for, and yeah, I couldn’t be happier for him.”
